Botox in London Ontario

What is Botox?

The Botox injections used by Medical Aesthetics are produced from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Each strain of Clostridium botulinum bacterium creates one of the seven types of botulinum toxins, designated A through G. Although each of the seven types interact with acetylcholine, the intercellular proteins that they target, their actions, and their potencies vary by type. Medical Aesthetics uses the type A toxin when administering Botox injections to our clients from London, Ontario.

The way in which we administer Botox treatments to our London, Ontario clientele is simple. The area to be treated will be numbed by either a cold pack or anesthetic cream to reduce the minimal, brief discomfort you would otherwise feel from the injections. The type A toxin will be dispensed into the targeted muscles in several small injections using a fine needle. Depending on how extensive the treatment area is, the whole procedure will take from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. You'll be able to resume your normal activities immediately upon leaving your Botox appointment, and can safely travel home to London.

Our London, Ontario clients see improvement in fine lines and wrinkles within 5-10 days of receiving a Botox treatment. You will continue to see improvement for approximately the first 30 days. The results of Botox injections typically last between three to six months, although some people only need new Botox injections as few as every nine months.

The History of Botox Treatments

Research on Botox started as early as the 1820s when Dr. Justinus Kerner was studying the food-borne botulism in sausages that had caused numerous deaths in Germany. By the 1890s, Dr. Emile Pierre van Ermengem from Belgium identified the seven different strains of botulism toxins, but it wasn't until the 1950s and 1960s that Dr. Edward J. Schantz was able to purify botulism toxin type A into crystalline form. This was the precursor to the injectable form that Medical Aesthtics applies to clients from London, Ontario.

Thanks to the research efforts of Dr. Alan B. Scott, botulism toxin type A was revealed to be a safe and effective treatment for crossed eyes and muscle spasms in humans. The Food and Drug Administrative approved its use for these purposes in 1989. In the 1990s, Botox was also approved for the treatment of excessive sweating and cerebral palsy. Botox's ability to reduce wrinkles was actually discovered by accident by ophthalmologist Jean Carruthers when she noticed that her patients looked less wrinkled in the weeks following treatments than they had before. Botox was approved for use on wrinkles in 2002 and has since been used successfully in Botox procedures in London and around the world.
