PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY FOR ACNE & SUNDAMAGE
PDT
THERAPY FOR ACNE
Photodynamic
Therapy is one of a number of new procedures that
treat the lesions and changes associated with acne
that are now available!
PDT is used in conjunction with microdermabrasion
and Levulan, (aminolevulinic acid) to treat moderate
to severe acne, including cystic acne. Levulan is a
topical photosensitizer that has been used
extensively for a variety of different conditions.
A typical PDT acne treatment starts with a light
microdermabrasion. This helps unclog pores and
remove blackheads and white heads (comedomes), as
well as exfoliate the surface of the skin. Following
the microdermabrasion, Levulan is applied to the
face. It is a clear liquid. A special wavelength of
light is then used to activate the Levulan in a
controlled fashion. The light source also tends to
alleviate any acne scarring, so there is an
additional benefit for the patient. Following the
treatment one can usually expect the skin to look
mildly red as in a sunburn for a few days.
The Photodynamic acne treatment program typically
consists of three PDT treatments that are performed
once a month. PDT can be used in combination with
both topical and oral medications. Prior to PDT, the
only treatment to show such good results was
Accutane. However, Accutane has many limitations,
including systemic side effects. Now many patients
can achieve good results with PDT and Levulan,
without the systemic side effects.
PDT THERAPY FOR SUN DAMAGE
Photodynamic skin
rejuvenation utilizes intense pulsed light or
another light source in combination with
microdermabrasion and levulan, also known as
aminolevulinic acid (ALA).
Levulan is a photosensitizer, which along with the
light treats and destroys actinic keratoses,
precancerous lesions, and potentially early skin
cancer changes.
PDT for skin rejuvenation usually consists of four
to six treatments at three week intervals. Following
the treatment one can expect the skin to look mildly
red or even sunburned. This effect can be expected
to last for a few days.
The skin improves with a more even colored tone,
smaller pore size, smoother texture, and a more
youthful rejuvenated look. Reduction in overall sun
damage, as well as precancerous lesions and
potential early skin cancer changes can also be
expected. PDT therapy is very effective for the
face, neck, arms, chest, hands, torso or legs.
